Europe 2020 and the European Semester
The Better Europe Alliance, coordinated by EAPN Ireland, brings together social, equality and environmental NGOs and Trade Unions as part of the Europe-wide Semester Alliance.
1. What is the European Semester?
Europe 2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, which covers the period 2010-2020 and contains economic, social and environmental commitments; and
The Stability and Growth Pact which came into force in 1998 and contains binding commitments on how EU Governments manage their deficits and debt.
The Alliance has recently had two sessions with the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs, which today produced its proposals on the Mid Term Review of Europe 2020, and meetings with key Government Departments, as well as producing its analysis of the European Commission’s Country Specific Recommendations.
